CHAPTER 2

I crashed to the ground with a terrible thump, injuring my already hurt hip, but I didn’t care that it was screaming with pain. All I cared about was the beloved injured man clutched to my chest. He was still with me. Being held by Ursijek hadn’t brought him home.

I don’t much like sheep, Reshatharin grumbled as my tears finally began to flow.

If I couldn’t wake him up, then this was the end. We couldn’t bring him with us any other way.

It’s fine. You’re fine.

I wasn’t fine. I was never going to be fine again.

I hugged Krullmark a little closer, biting my lip. He felt so big and heavy and solid in my arms. Like I couldn’t possibly lose him. And yet, if we didn’t find a way to take him with us …

This couldn’t end here. It must not.

Out there somewhere was a cabin by the sea that this brave man was building. And a life he had where he flew messages with his dragon. And he’d given all that up because he’d been worried about me. He’d given up all hope of advancement and acknowledgment and … well, everything … because he wanted to be with me.

I’d hardly even thought about it when he told me he had decided to stay by me. And I’d rarely taken it into account since as I made choice after choice that dragged him along whether he was in agreement or not.

And now he was trapped here, injured and vulnerable. Because of choice I made. And his love for me that wouldn’t let him walk away.

My eyes were blurred with tears as I looked into the sky, fighting the way my whole body was shaking with suppressed sobs. I hadn’t read the book of truth before it had been torn from me. I didn’t know if there was something or someone beyond all this who looked down on humans and dragons with mercy, but I hoped if there was, it was looking on me because I didn’t know what to do. I needed help.

Please. Please, I begged in my mind.

I sniffed hard against the tears that fell. That cleared my vision for a moment and what I saw were the Healing Arches. They’d been full of purple pulsing magic a moment ago but it was all gone now. They were just stone. And I’d almost forgotten them with the more important Daquin seated in front of them holding the rod.

But they were still Healing Arches, weren’t they? The exact same arches that had healed and freed Ystren so long ago? Those ones?

And I felt not an ounce of hesitation as I reached for them with all my heart, with my last shreds of hope, and with all my love for the bear of a man in my arms who had spent himself to the last drop out of love for me.

If I had ever hoped for myself, now I hoped for him. If I had ever wanted for myself, now I wanted for him.
